Tower Theatre
The Tower Theater located in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania - at the intersection of 69th and Ludlow Streets adjacent to 69th Street Terminal, was built in the year 1927. One year after its completion, John H. McClatchy inaugurated the Tower Theater, as one of Upper Darby Townships's first movie houses. Situated just outside the city limititaions of Philadelphia, the theater prospered in the active part of the city, once considered to be the most highly traveled route to the city from the south. Near the beginning of its creation, Tower Theater served purposes of both vaudeville acts and movies.
Distinguished performers that have appeared at the Tower Theater include The Cure, Interpol, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Smashing Pumpkins, David Bowie, Morrissey, Lewis Black, Traffic, John Fogerty, George Carlin, Bruce Springsteen, The Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow, Australian Pink Floyd Show, Tool, The Musical Box, Goo Goo Dolls, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Keane, The Brian Setzer Orchestra Philly's own The Disco Biscuits, The Roots, and Kelly Clarkson.
In 1970, the Tower Theater was renovated to its existing condition, a concert hall. Movies could still be seen though less often, such as Brother of The Wind up to 1973. Soon after, even though its purpose changed, the theater still is similar to very much like how it looked in the past. The theater features a twist exhibition area like many theatres of the same time period and extraordinary gothic structural design. The ceilings are high with beautifully arched doorways and marble floors. The concert hall accommodates around 3,000 people depending on the stage setup.
