Sheas Performing Arts Center
Shea's Performing Arts Center, located in Buffalo, New York, is a theater for touring Broadway musicals and special events. Initially entitled Shea's Buffalo, it was built in 1926 to screen silent movies. It acquired one year to build the entire theatre. Shea's boasts one of the few theatre theater organs which are still running nowadays in the country. The Mighty Wurlitzer is an archetypal theatre organ that has all the traditional stops provided that other sounds like a full percussion section. The organ has four manuals.
Shea's Buffalo, flagship of the theater chain, was designed by the noted firm of Rapp and Rapp of Chicago. Sculpted in an arrangement of Spanish and French Baroque and Rococo styles, the lobby was designed to bear a resemblance to the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. At first the seating capacity was around 4,000 people, but numerous seats were detached in the 1930s to make more comfy accommodations in the orchestra area. The interior decor, designed in the Tiffany style, comprised of furnishings and fixtures supplied by Marshall Field in Chicago, and massive Czechoslovakian crystal chandeliers of the premium quality. The interior contains over one acre of seating. In 1926, the cost of construction and outfitting of the theater was estimated to sum up to staggering $3,000,000. it was during the time when a new house could be purchased for $3,000 and a new Model A Ford was $1,000. Opened on January 16, 1926, the theater with the film King of Main Street starred James Cagney. In 1930 Michael Shea retired, and Shea's interests were headed by V. R. McFaul, who possessed and managed more than a few dozen Shea's Theaters from Ashtabula, Ohio to Erie and Bradford, PA, to the nearly dozen movie houses and lesser movie palaces situated in the metro Buffalo area until his death in 1955. In 1948Loew's Corp took over the chain's interests, upon the Deregulation of the Movie and Theater Industry adjudicated by the Supreme Court.
In 1974 the city closed out for back taxes and after three decades of great struggle Shea's Performing Arts Center remains one of the best movie palaces, in addition to, a shining exemplar of metropolitan reclaim and renewal. It has again become the foundation stone of Buffalo's nightlife and theater district.
In 2006, to commemorate the theater's 80th birthday, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of the world-renowned JoAnn Falletta played a concert there with Anthony Neuman playing the organ. Highlights of the program included Camille Saint-Saëns "Organ" Symphony 3 in C minor, selections from The Phantom of the Opera, Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and Louis Vierne's Carillon on Westminster Chimes.
At Shea’s, Not only did audiences see a first-run movie, but they were treated with a performance by the house orchestra, solo performances, on Shea's Mighty Wurlitzer organ, newsreels, and a spectacular live stage show.
Over the next 25 years, Shea's Buffalo was the place to find the premium stage and screen entertainment. The list of great performers who have refined the stage is almost eternal George Burns and Gracie Allen, the Marx Brothers, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Bing Crosby, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and Harry James.
In 1948, Shea's Buffalo became part of the Loew's chain of theaters. By this time, stage shows were no longer a realistic form of entertainment and Shea's became a straight film house.
During this time Shea's sustained showing films, but was no longer the showplace it had once been. The theater itself fell into poor shape. In July of 1975, the Loew's Corporation ended its operations of the Buffalo as a film house. In December of 1974, the City of Buffalo had in the meantime closed out on the property for back taxes.
A small group of people, presently to become "The Friends of the Buffalo," made endeavors to save the outstanding structure. The charitable organization was formed under the direction of L. Curt Mangell who had served as chief engineer for Shea's. Refurbishment work on the theater was begun with the efforts of the Friends.
