Pabst Theater
An indoor concert venue namely, the Pabst Theater is a milestone of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S. idiomatically recognized as "the Pabst", the theater hosts about 100 events per year. Being the fourth-oldest continuously operating theater in the United States, it has highlighted such distinguished artists as pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff, actor Laurence Olivier, and ballerina Anna Pavlova, as well as the majority of existing big-name musical acts.
The Pabst is identified for its lavishness in addition to its role in German-American culture in Milwaukee. Officially designated as a City of Milwaukee Landmark and a State of Wisconsin Historical Site, it was also designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991. It is every now and then described as the "Grande Olde Lady", being the oldest theater in Milwaukee's theater district.
In 1895, Milwaukee’s jewel box, The Pabst Theater, was built by tycoon Captain Frederick Pabst, and was designed by architect Otto Strack in the traditional fashion of the great European opera houses. Its magnificent Baroque interior décor comprise of an Austrian crystal chandelier, a staircase crafted from white Italian Carrara marble, and a proscenium arch which is decorated in gold leaf and surrounds the stage.
The Pabst Theater was in fact built out of a previously built theater famous as Das Neue Deutsche Stadt-Theater, which had been built by Captain Pabst in 1890. When informed of the fire despite the fact that he was on vacation in Europe in 1895, Captain Pabst apparently asked to build it again. In an extraordinarily short time, hardly a duration of just 11 months, the theater was reconstructed.
The new building was built in a modernized fashion that was later copied by other theaters. With high-tech fireproofing measures which comprised of a superstructure of cast iron and concrete, plus with only the stage floor and window frames constructed of wood, and the traditional "fire curtain" (which can be lowered to separate the audience from the stage) was an exceptional manufacture of wire mesh drawn in a way to outlive most any fire. Semi-cantilevered construction for the balcony and gallery removed view-blocking columns common to theaters of the day, and backstage the theater boasted the first use in the city of a complete permanent steel counterweight system to fly scenery and draperies, and the first use of an all-electric lighting system in the United States. The theater possessed an element which had also been present in the Stadt: the use of names of distinguished artists emblazoned about the cornice of the drum-shaped auditorium. At the Stadt, the names had been of German notables; at the Pabst, other nations are symbolized as well. The leading ornament in the auditorium is a seven-foot tall statue of Apollo, flanked by the muses of Drama and Song, upon the apex of the proscenium arch.
