Meyerson Symphony Center
The Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center - a concert hall located in the Arts District of downtown Dallas, Texas (USA) was designed by architect I.M. Pei and Russell Johnson's Artec Acoustic Consultants, Inc.
Opened in September of 1989, The Center has been named after Morton Meyerson, arts benefactor and business partner of Ross Perot, who endowed with $10 million in funds for its construction and erection. It is the permanent home of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the primary performing venue of the Dallas Wind Symphony in addition to numerous other Dallas based musical organizations. The City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs is owned and managed by the Meyerson Symphony Center.
The exterior of the large exhibition area and lobby is spherical and has been made out of glass and metal supports to apropos with the solid geometric lines of the actual hall. The concert hall, which has been designed by Russell Johnson's organization, namely Artec Acoustic Consultants, is in the standard shoebox style and seats 2,062. Acoustical canopies above the hall can be raised or lowered to reshape the auricular properties of the hall.
Interestingly, The Meyerson Symphony Center is also home to the C.B. Fisk Opus 100 organ, recognized as the Lay Family Concert Organ. Whilst it had been Charles Fisk's conception to construct a monumental concert organ, but in spite of years of development and design, unfortunately, he lived long enough to see his dream come to reality and he passed away in 1983. The resulting instrument, almost generally hailed as a musical triumph, with fairly similar to his previous ideas, was quite different from his original designs.
The shoebox design of the main concert hall was designed to attain acoustics performance akin to that of the Vienna Musikverein and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
