Six Drama Desk Award winner “WICKED the musical” is a must watch for all those who wish to understand the alternative viewpoints! It is a spellbinding story of the good and the bad. It helps you to have an insight of reality from the different angle. The play lets us to the dark side of the beautiful land of OZ, where you can see the slave labor, oppression and suffering.
Wicked, a Broadway Musical, takes you through the life journey of two girls (witches). One is born with the emerald green skin, is smart but hugely misunderstood. Other is beautiful, determined and appreciated by all. The two had extremely opposite personalities yet become friends. They ended up having a Love-hate relationship while living together as college roommates. The story of the musical is based on best selling novel by George Maguire and is a reimaging of classic story by L Frank Baum “The wonderful wizard of Oz”. It takes you through the land of OZ from the perspective of a Wicked Witch. How she finds the world around her, people’s reactions interpreted by the person who is dejected by all and the way she deals with everything.
Wicked in a way carries a deeper political meaning attached to it. OZ is a land controlled by a fearful leader, a land in which colour of your skin will determine your strata in society…all this is not too different from the real life and carries lots of significance in today’s’ world. Play is full of astonishing and wonderful moments. Set transition from one scene to another is in smooth flow, you will enjoy the scenes from the school’s classroom to amazingly strange Emerald city, from the beautiful ball room to the dark dungeon. It is a must watch for all those who wish to perceive and understand things from not-so-conventional angle.
It is a story of Elphaba, future wicked witch of the West and her relationship with Good Witch of the North, Glinda. The good and the bad were the friends but their friendship suffered a lot because of their opposing personalities and beliefs; they fought over the same love interests and their stance on the corrupt government of the wizard. Finally Elphaba faced a down fall in the eyes of the public for the wickedness. Story is set in the time before the arrival of Dorothy from Kansas and you will find lots of scenes and dialogues from the wizard of OZ.
In 1995 Stephen Schwartz discovered Meguires novel and decided to adapt it for the musical drama performance. After getting the rights for the stage production from Maguire he collaborated with Emmy Award winner writer Winnie Holzman to develop the outline of the plot in the years span. It was Maguires idea to tell the story from the point of view of the most hated character of any story “villain”. The play narrates the story from the Elphaba point of view. To begin with, idea of the play was to show the development of relationship between two college roommates and how they were destined to end up in entirely different pathways. In addition to all the other interesting twists in the story, Fiyero appeared as the scarecrow, Elphaba's survived at the end, Nessarose instead of being armless ended up on a wheelchair and of all Doctor Dillamond was not murdered.
Wicked was opened for a pre-Broadway show on May 28, 2003 at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. Lyrics and music of Wicked was by Stephen Schwartz and the musical staging was taken care by Wayne Cilento. Eugene Lee, Tony Award-winning designer, created a set and visual style for the production. His designs were based upon both W.W Denslaw's original illustrations for Baum's novels and Maguire's concept of the story being told through a giant clock. Susan Hilferty was hired to create the costumes for the musical, she came up with a "twisted Edwardian" style wardrobe and assecories for more than 200 costumes. The play’s lighting engineer Kenneth Posner used more than 800 individual lights to give the unique feeling and mood to all the scenes. The trial run finished on June 29 and after minor transformations play was set out on Broadway on 30 October, 2003. Most of the production team and cast members was the same. Other renowned actors who were the part of the production includes Jennifer Laura Thompson, Megan Hilty, Kate Reinders, Kendra Kassebaum, Ana Gasteyer, Julia Murney, Stephanie J. Block, Kristoffer Cusick, Taye Diggs, Joey McIntyre, David Ayers, and Sebastian Arcelus as Fiyero; George Hearn, Ben Vereen, David Garrison, and Lenny Wolpe as the Wizard; Michelle Federer and Jenna Leigh Green as Nessarose; Randy Harrison and Robb Sapp as Boq; and Rue McClanahan, Carol Kane, Jayne Houdyshell, and Miriam Margolyes as Madame Morrible.
