Les Miserables

1980 Musical Les Misérables is also known as Les Mis and Les Miz. The musical's libretto was written by Alain Boublil, while in 1980, it was composed by Claude Michel. The musical became the longest running musical at the West End, London on October 8, 2006, when the musical also celebrated its 21st anniversary.

The plot of the musical is base upon the novel written by Victor Hugo that came in 1862 with the same name. Les Misérables depicts France during the 19th century, and tells the story of its cast members who struggle and make efforts for the revolution and redemption. Jean Valjean is one of the characters of Les Misérables, who is basically portrayed as a convict who fails to find the work where he can work as an honest man, while the character of Javert is a policeman who is in search of Valjean. Fantine is portrayed as a single mother of her daughter, who is ultimately forced to become a prostitute in other to support the upbringing of her daughter.

The name of her daughter is Cosette, who finds herself in love with a French student named Marius Pontmercy. Later after the demise of Fantine, Cosette is adopted as a daughter by Valjean. The character of unscrupulous innkeepers is named Thenardiers, whose living is depended upon cheating and stealing. The name of their daughter is Eponine who also finds her self deeply in love with Marius. The character of Enjolras is the one who plans the riot in order to free the oppressed lower class of the France, while the character of Gavroche is portrayed as the young boy who happens to be a beggar.

The musical was premiered in France at Palais Des Sports in Paris in September 1981, and soon after it short lived run, it was cited a failure. A year later, in 1982, the work on the English version of Les Misérables was initiated by a British Producer Cameron Mackintosh. Later Mackintosh appointed Herbert Kretzmer to write the lyrics for the musical. The English version of the musical was directed by John Caird and Trevor Nunn. The English version of Les Misérables was premiered at Barbican Arts Centre in London on October 8, 1985.

The musical was later transferred to Palace Theatre, from where it was transferred again, this time to Queen's Theatre. The musical is currently playing at the latter venue. The reviews that the musical received were a bit mixed as some critics liked it to some extent while some of them condemned turning French piece of literature into an English musical. Whether good or bad, the word about the musical was out which attracted the attention of viewers towards it and ultimately box office was bombarded with orders.

On March 12, 1987 Les Misérables was opened at Broadway production and that during its performance run it was nominated for a total of 12 Tony Awards, out of which musical was able to win 8 awards that also included the award for best musical. After completing its 6,680 performance run on Broadway the musical finally closed on May 18, 2003. The Revival of the musical on Broadway was opened at Broadhurst Theatre on November 9, 2006.

He in the meanwhile also met dying Fantine in whom he saw his own life miseries. She had a daughter and before her death Valjean promised her to take care of her. So now the center of attention of ValJean's life is Cosette, daughter of Fantine. He tries to keep her away from her lover thinking that he'll be alone but after knowing that Cosette's lover is in danger. He saves him and then eventually Marius (the lover) and Cosette gets married.

Now Valjean is broken as he feels that Cosette doesn't need him anymore. Marius also tries to keep her away from Valjean as he considers him a personality having poor character. But he finds about his good deed when Valjean is already on his death bed. Mainly the focus of the drama is on legalism. The show is on the whole is about the emotions and person growth of a personality. That touches the heart of spectators of all ages.
