Washington Nationals
Based in Washington D.C., Washington Nationals is a Major League Baseball team that was before 2004 played as Montreal Expos, but in 2004 the Expos moved to Washington hence a new team with the name Washington Nationals was formed. Nationals, among the fans, are also known as the Nats. Before Washington Nationals, Washington Senators used to play from Washington D.C but since Senators moved to Dallas/Fort worth Sea, the team was renamed to Texas Rangers, the teams' relocation was the first in Major League Baseball since 1972. Since 1899, franchise also has the privilege of being the Washington's first in the National League. The team was owned by the Major League Baseball itself from 2002 till the mid of 2006, but then on May 3, 2006 a new owner of the team was selected under Theodre N. Lerner. The possession of the team was transferred to the new owners on July 22, 2006. The teams' new president was Stan Kasten, who was also a former sports executive of another team called Atlanta Braves.
Washington Nationals are the members of Eastern Division of National League of Major league Baseball. The team plays their home games at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, which also used to be the ballpark of the Washington Senators. This stadium also played the role of home ground for the second Senators' team as well. In the spring of the year 2008, the team moved on to Nationals Park, which is their new ballpark now, which is located at the South Capitol Street, SE.
As the teamed played its very first season as the Washington Nationals on April 4, 2005, Brad Wilkerson had the privilege of being the first batter to bat for the Nationals. And in the Nationals history, he was the first guy to make a hit for the Washington Nationals; however the home team of Philadelphia Phillies was led to the victory of 8-4 over the new Nationals team, by Jon Lieber and Kenny Lofton, at Citizens Bank Park. Also in this match up, Out Fielder Termel Sledge managed to hit the first home run for the Nationals team. It was on April 6, 2005 when the Washington Nationals managed to win their first regular season as Nationals as the defeated Philadelphia Phillies with a 7-3.
At RFK Stadium on April 14, 2005, Washington Nationals managed to fetch their first regular season victory at their home ground. Washington also has the tradition that the current president of US throws the first pitch on the opening day, which is why President George W. Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch on the opening day in Washington. This traditional has been regularly followed for past 95 years and it was started by William Howard Taft at Griffith Stadium.
Washington Nationals are known to attract more audience than they ever did as the Montreal Expos. In the 2005 season, the total attendance in Washington D.C. was 2,731,993, which was equal to the attendance that Montreal attracted in its three seasons (2002-04) combined.
