Seattle Seahawks
Based in Seattle, Washington, Seattle Seahawks play for the Western Division of National Football Conference of the National Football League. Seahawks became the member of National Football League in 1976, and also in the same year Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the NFL as well. Before playing for National Football Conference, Seahawks also played for American Football Conference, making them the only team to play both for NFC and AFC.
The intention of creating Seattle based football franchise was revealed by the group of Seattle's business men and community leaders on June 15, 1972. The group succeeded in doing so when they were awarded with an expansion franchise by the NFL on June 4, 1974. Official signing of the franchise agreement was carried out on December 5, 1974 between Lloyd W. Nordstrom and the Commissioner of NFL, Pete Rozelle. Just few months before Seahawks played their first game Nordstrom died because of a heart attack on January 20, 1976.
The first general manager of the team was John Thompson who was appointed on March 5, 1975, and in the mean time the team wasn't named yet. A public contest was held to choose the name of the team and from that contest the name Seattle Seahawks was picked and the team was named Seahawks on June 17, 1975. After the team got its name, former assistant coach of Minnesota Vikings Jack Patera was hired as the head coach of the team by General Manager John Thompson.
It was on March 30 and 31, 1976 when the draft picking was held, in which Seattle Seahawks along with Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked unprotected players from rest of the 26 teams in NFL. On their 2nd overall pick, Seahawks had the addition of Steve Niehaus. The team played its very first match against San Francisco 49ers on August 1, 1976 in a pre season game.
Seahawks had their summer training camp at Eastern Washington University, Cheney. From 1976 till 1985, their summer training camps were held there, however in 1986 it was changed to Kirkland where their camp summer training camp stayed till 1996. The following year, their camp was changed to Cheney again and after holding their camp their till 2006 the team moved its camp back to Kirkland Practice Facility in 2007.
In the beginning the teams logo comprised of a green hawk's head colored Navy Blue. Team's apparel for their home games was colored royal blue along with white, blue and green stripes on the arms; While their away uniform was colored White along with blue and green stripes on the arms. Teams' pants and helmets were colored silver.
Teams' uniform remained the same till the head coach of the team Jack Patera was replaced with the new coach of the team Chuck Knox in 1983. The changes in the uniforms weren't that significant. The changes included were incorporation of Seahawks logo with the stripes on their arms; and the TV numbers were moved slightly towards the shoulders. However teams' logo and uniforms had significant changes in the year 2002.
As of 2006, the Seahawks' flagship station is KIRO 710AM. It is the only station the team has ever had. The current announcers are former Seahawks Steve Raible and Warren Moon. Pete Gross, who called the games from 1976 until just days before his death from cancer in 1992, is a member of the team's Ring of Honor. Games are heard on 47 stations in five states and Canada. Preseason games not shown on national networks are televised by KING-TV, channel 5. Verne Lundquist was the play-by-play announcer in 2006; Fox Sports Net produced the games.
