The Athletics played the Philadelphia Phillies, for the first time in a regular season game in June of 2003. Previously they had only played each other in exhibition games, dubbed "The City Series". These games were played annually from 1903-1954. The A's had winning record of 123 games to the Phils' 115, with two ties.
For the first game of the 3 game series, Ceremonies were held at Veterans Stadium. Also former Philadelphia A's players were honored on the field. The Phillies won the series against the A's, 2–1.
They played each other again in June of 2005 in Oakland. This time the White Elephants defeating their former rivals two games to one.
