Along with the New York Yankees, the New York Mets are one of two major league franchises in the City of New York. The Mets acquired all-star catcher Gary Carter from the Montreal Expos in 1985 and won 98 games. But they lost the division title to the St. Louis Cardinals in the final days of the season in a memorable series.

The Mets 2006 division title ended the Atlanta Braves' streak of 14 straight division titles. Besides Atlanta, they became the first team to win the National League East title since the 1994 division realignment. 2006 was also the first time ever that the Mets and Yankees each won their respective divisions in the same year. Both New York teams also had the best records in their respective leagues, 97 wins and 65 losses.
