Missouri Tigers
For fear of game attendance dropping, Missouri coach, C. L. Brewer, appealed for the "Old Grads" to "Come Back Home" and boost attendance. With this, the fans responded well, and the crowd at Rollins Field in Columbia grew to over ten thousand. This home coming event [1911] is considered to be the first home coming game, and is recognized by Missouri, The NCAA, Trivial Pursuit, and Jeopardy!
Other schools that lay claim to pioneering the home coming event include Baylor University, Illinois, and Indiana University. Baylor claims that they held their first homecoming game in 1909. Illinois claims that they had it on October 15, 1910, and Indiana claims the same thing on October 21, 1910. However, Missouri’s claim is the one that is accepted over these ones.
