Minnesota Twins
The Minnesota Twins had its origin in Washington, D.C. in 1901 when the American League was formed. The franchise is a Major League Baseball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The ‘Minnesota' designation, instead of ‘Minneapolis' comes from the fact that the Club intends to represent the twin cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The unique TC logo worn on one version of their uniform's caps, and by their mascot, TC Bear further reinforced this fact. Even today, the team is keeping original ‘Twin Cities Twins' TC logo.
‘Twins' is derived from the popular name of the region, the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Twins are in the Central Division of the American League and had played there through the 1960 season. The Washington ballclub was known primarily by two nicknames, the Nationals and the Senators or ‘Nats' interchangeably. The club consisted of the management and the best players from the Kansas City franchise. Before moving to Minnesota, the club acquired a new owner in 1905, Thomas C. Noyes.
Noyes decided to officially name the club the Nationals. The players wore ‘Nationals' on their jerseys during 1905 to 1906. Later on, in the 1956 season, the owner Calvin Griffith decided to officially change the name to Senators. The word ‘Senators' appeared on the team members' shirts finally in 1959. The Nationals was very much strong due to the presence of Walter ‘The Big Train' Johnson during the period 1907 to 1927. The team was successful in winning the 1924 World Series. Having appeared in the 1925 and 1933 Series, the team fell into mediocrity quickly afterwards.
In the early years, the performance of the Nationals was appalling. Perhaps for this reason, the team is being remembered mostly for its failures rather than its middle-years successes. The longtime spirited struggles of the club were fictionalized in the book titled The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant which also became the Broadway musical and movie Damn Yankees. You Gotta Have Heart - One of the songs from the musical - was frequently played at baseball games.
The plot of the ‘The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant' concerned a long suffering middle-aged fan of the Washington Senators baseball club, Joe Boyd who sold his soul to the Devil and become a long ball hitter Joe Hardy. Boyd's hitting ability enabled the Senators to win the American League pennant over Yankees, the then-dominant baseball Club. Later in 1965, the team won the American League Pennant and the exciting play of superstar sluggers Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva and flashy play of league MVP Zoilo Versalles paved the way for this grand victory.
Unfortunately, the Twins were defeated in the 1965 World Series by the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games. Although disappointed with the near miss, the championship drive strengthened the team's relationship with the people of Minnesota. In 1987, the Minnesota Twins got a new look but the cap was abandoned. However the ‘TC' logo returned to one version of the home uniforms in 2002. The logo was containing two large twins representing Minneapolis and St. Paul shaking hands over the Mississippi River. The Twins finally returned the World Series, beating the St. Louis Cardinals the same year.
The performance of The Twins was very poor in 1990. They finished last in their division with only 74 wins. However, The Twins were successful in defeating the Atlanta Braves and won 1991 World Series. This wonderful victory is recognized by many to be the greatest of all-time. Game 6 is widely considered to be one of the greatest World Series games ever played.
The Twins have been outstanding during the period from 2001 to 2006. They compiled the longest streak of consecutive winning seasons since moving to Minnesota, going 85-77 in 2001, 94-67 in 2002, 90-72 in 2003, 92-70 in 2004, 83-79 in 2005, and 96-68 in 2006. From 2002 to 2004, the Twins compiled their longest streak of consecutive league/division championships ever.
