Later Danny Thomas sold his share of the team to Robbie as well, making Robbie the sole owner of the team. Also in the same year, a public contest was held to choose a name for the new expansion franchise. Several nicknames for the team were put forward through a total of 19,843 entries out of which 622 entries suggested the name Dolphins for the team. Later after the draw Robert Swanson was held the lucky winner to win the free lifetime passes to Dolphins games.

In the teas 1980 season, Bob Griese who suffered for injuries was replaced with David Woodley. It was the last season for Bob Griese after that he retired due to his shoulder injury. The Dolphins without making it to the playoffs finished off their season with a record of 8-8.

The following season the team was on top with a record of 11-4-1. The team was able to make it to the divisional playoff where they faced San Diego Chargers, a game which would later be remembered as The Epic in Miami as it became the most memorable game in National Football History.

The Dolphins have started wearing a substitute orange jersey once each season for home Monday Night Football contests, since the season of 2003. They are 2-0 in games dressed in the alternate jersey (each of which was comebacks against the Washington Redskins in 2003 and against ultimate Super Bowl champs and Division-rivals the New England Patriots in 2004).

The Dolphins were not dressed in orange jerseys during the 2005 season as they had no night games.New coach Nick Saban did not have the Dolphins wear the aqua pants with the white jerseys, as an alternative chosing the all-white outfit in 2005. Earlier to Saban's advent, the team conventionally wore all-white at home moreover aqua pants with white jerseys on the road under former coach Dave Wannstedt.
