Florida Marlins

Miami, Florida based professional Major League Baseball team, Florida Marlins, is the member of Eastern Division of National League of Major League Baseball. Marlins is basically a name of the fish species, which is why they are sometimes also nicknamed "The Fish". Marlins became the member of National League as an expansion team in 1993, and since then they have been playing their home games at Dolphin Stadium.

As of today, Marlins have won a total of 2 World Series Titles, one was in 1997 and the other one was in 2003. Through out their history they have been able to make it to the Post season only twice, and that was also in 1997 and 2003 when they won World Series titles.

Even though the team was successful in post season, but still team wasn't able to attract a sound number of audiences in its games. The blame of having fewer amounts of audiences was put on the stadium, which is why the Owners of the Florida Marlins pushed for having a new ballpark. After enough struggle, the team reached to a deal with Miami-Dade commissioners and City of Miami commissioners, to build a new ballpark for Marlins at the legendary site of Miami Orange Bowl. It was also a petition of the deal that the team will be renamed to Miami Marlins.

Major League Baseball announced that it is planning to induce two more expansion teams in the National League. Few months later on March 7, 1990, the CEO of Blockbuster Entertainment Corporation, Mr. H. Wayne Huizenga made an official announcement that he will be purchasing 15% of Miami Dolphins and 50% of Joe Robbie Stadium which was Dolphins home ground.

Wayne's main aim was to pursue an expansion franchise. It was nearly inevitable that the expansion teams that MLB wanted to induced in National League would be from Florida. The other groups that were competing for expansion franchise, against Huizenga, were from Orlando and Tampa. However what was referred to be inevitable actually happened and MLB awarded the Miami Base expansion franchise for expansion fee of $95 Million to Huizenga.

After he got his hands on the expansion franchise, Huizenga's next step was to covert Joe Robbie Stadium, which was a NFL stadium; in to multi-purpose stadium that could also hold baseball match ups. Joe Robbie Stadium was named after its founder Joe Robbie.

Before he built the stadium he could foresee that the baseball would one day come to Florida which is why Joe Robbie Stadium's field was wider than the normal NFL stadium. Due to this, Huizenga only had to spend $100 Million for the renovation of the stadium. In 1994, Huizenga also bought Miami Dolphins and the stadium as well.

The former manager of Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners, Rene Lachemann, became the first manager of Marlins. The initial line up for Marlins was drafted to the team in 1992, in the MLB Expansion Draft. Also in the same year, Marlins, in their inaugural Spring Training Game, defeated Houston Astros with 12-8. The team saw its first home run at the Cocoa Expo Stadium, hit by Jeff Conine. Florida Marlins achieved their first victory on 5 April, 1993, when they defeated the Dodgers.

The renovation cost only $100 million, largely because Dolphins founder Joe Robbie had anticipated that baseball would eventually come to South Florida and built the stadium with a wider field than is normally the case for the NFL. Huizenga also marketed and got a waiver from ESPN and MLB. The Marlins have a schedule of nearly all of their games during the summer months at night due to South Florida's hot and humid summers.

The Marlins' has a manager Rene Lachemann, as their first one. He was a former catcher who had previously managed the Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers. The team had drafted its initial lineup of players in the 1992 MLB Expansion Draft. The Marlins defeated the Houston Astros 12-8 in their inaugural Spring Training game in the year of 1992. Later the team had started to participate in the matches on regular basis. They have got the fame and view ship very soon, due to their outstanding performances.
