Detroit Tigers

Detroit, Michigan based professional baseball team; Detroit Tigers was established in 1894. Presently they play for the Central Division of American League of Major League baseball, and most recently they became American League Champions in 2006. The team of Detroit Tigers is owned by Mike Ilitch, who also has the ownership of National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings and also of Little Caesars Pizza.

It was in 2006, when Detroit Tigers won the American League Championship Series most recently as of their history, after defeating Oakland with 4 games to none. Apart from that Detroit Tigers were defeated by St. Louis Cardinals with 4 games to 1.

Detroit Tigers are the proud Charter Member of the American League, and it received its charter membership with American League in 1894. Detroit Tigers is one of the four few teams that are still located where it was founded. Rests of three teams that are still located where they were founded are Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. Apart from that, Detroit Tigers also have the privilege of being the only team which is American Leagues predecessor as well as the member of Western League that still stays in the city it was founded in.

For the very first time, Detroit's got an entry to a major league as they became the members of National League in 1881 with the name of Detroit Wolverines. They kept on playing for the National League with the same name up till 1888. As Detroit Wolverines, the team saw most of its success in the year 1887 in which they won National League Pennant along with an exhibition World Series.

They did so, as they defeated the previous American Association Champions, St. Louis Browns with the victory of 10 games to 5. Back then Detroit Wolverines roster included players like Jack Rowe, Deacon White, Hardy Richardson along with Hall of Famer's ‘Big Sam' Thompson and Dan Brouthers and the pitcher Charlie Getzein. Also in 1887, Thompson was the proud winner of National League's Batting Championship that made the only player that holds the National League Batting Title from the traditionally American League city.

Currently Detroit Tigers play their home games in Comerica Park. They started playing their home games there ever since the year 2000, before that they used to play their home games in Tiger Stadium from 1912 up till 1999. To date, Detroit Tigers have managed to win a total of 4 World Series titles in the years 1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984. Their most recent success was when they won American League pennant back in the year 2006. As of today Tigers have won a total of 10 American League Pennants along with three East Division Titles.

During Tigers 2008, fans expectations were really at peak since Detroit Tigers roster welcomed Edgar Renteria from Atlanta Braves along with two players from Florida Marlins, who were Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera. Unfortunately Detroit's start for the 2008 wasn't what fans were expecting as they lost 7 consecutive games in the beginning. However later in season they worked their way back as through halfway season they were at 41-40.

The Tigers also have an "international" rivalry with the Toronto Blue Jays. Detroit is just across the river from the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario. Some baseball fans in Windsor choose to root for their nation's team rather than the nearby Tigers but the majority of Windsor baseball fans root for the Tigers. The rivalry was especially hot in the 1980s when both the Blue Jays and the Tigers were battling for American League Eastern Division title. Old rivalries remain with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles dating back to the pre-division era (before 1969) and when the Tigers were part of the American League East.

Detroit will begin spring training with Wilfredo Ledezma as the only southpaw manager Jim Leyland will be able to call on. The Tigers are also interested in replacing left-hander Jamie Walker in the late innings or for one particular batter. The Tigers refused to pay Walker the same amount as Baltimore offered him.So he had no other option but to leave. The Tigers know who's left in their bullpen. They'd just like to find one more arm.
