Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland, Ohio based professional basketball team, Cleveland Cavaliers, was established back in the year 1970. Apart from being known as Cleveland Cavaliers, they are also known as the Cavs and the team used the original Cavs logo from 1970 till 1983. Since 1970 Cleveland Cavaliers have been playing for the National Basketball Association (NBA) as an expansion team.
Cleveland Cavaliers started playing as an expansion team back in 1970 and at that time team was owned by Nick Mileti. The team was led under the leadership of Coach Bill Fitch and played their home games at Cleveland Arena. During that time, team was also able score the leagues worst record of 15-67.
The teams hopes of reaching the heights of success rose as the 1971's draft pick Austin Carr was inducted in the Cleveland Cavaliers roster, but unfortunately he got his leg injured so bad that he could not recover enough to become and effective professional basketball player.
In the seasons in the following years Cleveland Cavaliers, the team's performance improved as the seasons passed by, and teams roster also welcomed some of the most key players in the game such as Jim Chones, Jim Cleamons, Bingo Smith and Dick Snyder. These new entrants to the team's roster had a positive impact on the part of team's performance in their following seasons. Cleveland Cavaliers improvement became evident when they scored a record of 23-59 in their sophomore season, and later in 1972-1973 season they were able to score an even better record of 32-50, however in the following season of 1973-74, their performance went down a bit to the record of 29-53.
Cleveland Cavaliers moved to a new home ground of Richfield Coliseum, where they started playing their home games from 1974. The Coliseum is situated with in the cornfields that are located 30 miles south of the downtown Cleveland in Summit County. That year Cleveland Cavaliers finished their season with the record of 40-42, falling short of getting a play off berth.
With the new additions of Carr, Smith, Chones, Snyder along with Nate Thurmond, Cleveland Cavaliers coach Fitch, during the 1975-76 season, led Cleveland Cavaliers to score a record of 49-33. It was in the same season when they won their first and only division title as of today. Also in the same year, Fitch also received an award of Coach of Year, as he led the team to their first ever playoff appearance in the teams history.
The series in which Cleveland Cavaliers managed to defeat Washington Bullets with the record of 4-3, is recalled in the local region as the ‘Miracle of Richfield', as the team came out victorious due to several heroics and miraculous last second shots. On the other hand, team unfortunately lost to Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals of the NBA play offs, a reason of which was the injuries that were incurred, specifically injury of Jim Chones. Apart from winning their only Division Title in the year 1976, they also have been able to win Conference title in the 2007, which is also their most recent success.
The Cavs enjoyed peak of the success in the 1991-92 season. They compiled a 57-25 record in this season and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals. However, they lost again to the Chicago Bulls 4-2.
In March, the Cavaliers clinched their first playoff appearance since the 1997-98 season. Despite having the second best record, and faced the Washington Wizards in the first round, they wound up receiving the #4 seed in the Eastern Conference.
