Anaheim Angels
Finally, it was the National League who first came into the city and was known as Brooklyn Dodgers. The owner of Dodgers purchased the Pacific Coast League's Los Angeles Angels in the early 1957from Chicago Clubs owner, Phil Wrigley. Under the policy of that time, he also managed to acquire the rights to a major league team in Los Angeles. He used these rights a year later and moved Dodgers there. In normal circumstances, this should have prohibited any more subsequent American League presence in the Los Angeles area.
However, in an attempt to stop the proposed Continental League from becoming a reality, the two existing leagues agreed to expand in 1960, adding two new teams to each of the league. This expansion of teams had taken place under the condition that no major league baseball will come into existence; however this agreement soon broke down. When the National League placed a team in New York (the Mets) as part its tenth franchise, the American League announced its plans to place an expansion team in Los Angeles, to start playing in 1961. Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg was selected as the team's first owner and Bill Veeck as his partner. Later, Autry purchased the franchise.
The Team gets its Name
Autry named the new franchise the Los Angeles Angels. The name Angels is a natural name for the Los Angeles team, since The Angels is a literal English translation of the Spanish Los Angeles.
The 1960s: Early AL years
In 1961, the first year of the team's existence, the Angels gained the highest winning percentage ever for a first-year major league expansion team. The most favorites of the team were baseman Steve Bilko and El Monte, a center fielder. The first inaugural season was played by the Angels at the Wrigley Field in South Los Angeles.
In 1962, the Angels moved to the Dodger Stadium and stood at third place. On May 5 of this year, Bo Belinsky became famous by hitting the no-hit game in the history of Dodger Stadium.
